Traditions of Yoga: Sanskrit & Cultural Appreciation
Course Description
Honour the roots of the yogic tradition with an introduction to Sanskrit for yoga teachers. Learn the Sanskrit alphabet and develop confidence in correctly pronouncing asanas, along with foundational yogic and philosophical terms.
This 25-hour course offers a culturally informed exploration of yoga’s ancient roots, including insights into the lives of sadhus—both historically and in the present day—and the often unseen subcultures of India.
Become an informed ally to the tradition, cultivating reverence for yoga’s cultural context and its oral lineage of learning through Vedic storytelling.
Curriculum
- Introduction to recognizing Devanagari, the Sanskrit alphabet
- Practicing Sanskrit pronounciation for Yoga teachers
- Mantra recitation
- Vedic story as education
- Understanding cultural appreciation and appropriation
- Be in a space where you can be safe to learn what you don’t know
